Why You May Need to Supplement, Where to Start
Why you may need to supplement and where to start
You eat clean, whole foods. You sleep pretty good. You drink lots of water. You move your body every day. And you’ve been managing your stress – BUT something still feels off…
The reality is, is that even when we’re very conscientious about our healthy habits and eating a well-balanced diet, we can often fall short of good health nutritionally.
We’re talking at the cellular level here. Your body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals to function optimally.

There are six essential nutrients found in the body, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, vitamins and minerals — with proteins, carbs and fats classified as macronutrients. And vitamins and minerals classified as micronutrients.
These are the main classes of nutrients, which can further be broken down into specific micronutrients that are especially important for health. And we will get into all that here on the blog, but figured the beginning was the best place to start for now.
Essential nutrients cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained through other means while many nonessential nutrients can be both synthesized and absorbed from food.
Vitamin C and the 8 B vitamins, including folic acid, niacin, pantothenic acid, and biotin, generally are stored in the body in only small amounts, so you need to eat foods rich in them regularly.
Vitamins A, D, E, and K are stored in body fat until used, but you still need a steady supply.
Hence where, supplementation comes in, to ensure you are getting enough essential nutrients. Not getting enough of these essential nutrients leads to body system dysfunction.
As we know, when there is system dysfunction, it often means that body system (or those cells) do not have access to the vital nutrients they need to function properly. Many rely on medications or diet to modify or manage these system issues or dysfunction.
The problem is, our modern diet and western medications often have the opposite effect on our health because the real issue comes down nutrition and the foods we eat lacking the vital nutrients we need.
And vicious cycle of poor health begins.
Most nutritionists or dieticians will tell you that while, technically, a whole foods diet should provide us with all the good stuff we need for optimum health, there’s a whole host of modern day environmental and lifestyle issues that make it much harder to get those vital nutrients, than it was for our ancestors.
In the past, harvests fully embodied the vital nutrients of the soil and sea, and those nutrients nourished people fully. That is not the case anymore.
Our modern methods of agriculture and food production influences the need for supplementing important nutrients in our diet because,
- Soil depletion leads to the reduction of nutrient dense crops
- Modern fertilizers destroy nutrient elements in soils and crops
- Pesticides and herbicides reduce the nutritional value of foods
- Refined and processed foods literally removes vital minerals and vitamins
- Weak digestion and poor lifestyle habits, and stress all deplete important vitamins and minerals from the body
With the combination of modern intensive farming methods, our modern lifestyles and the urban environments we live in, there are many reasons it may be necessary to consider adding supplements to your health regime.
In essence, our fishing and farming methods have changed drastically, creating a dramatic impact on the nutritional value of our food, requiring us to step up our game when it comes to ensuring we are not just eating food, but consuming vital nutrients.
Minute but mighty, micro-nutrients (minerals and vitamins) play a BIG part in good health. The amount of minerals and vitamins we need may be small compared to macro-nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats, but their influence on our wellbeing is huge.
Some of the benefits you may feel from supplementing important vitamins and nutrients include,
- Improved health outcomes due to increased levels of the B Vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin D. Vitamin A and other essential nutrients
- Better weight, sleep and stress management
- Improved functional performance and energy
- Reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other illness or symptoms
- Boosted and supported immune system
- That feeling so good feeling
Who wouldn’t want that!
