What is After-Care vs Self-Care?

What most people these days are calling self-care is really after care.

Taking care of themselves after they are burnt out, exhausted, etc or not doing the things they actually need to do to be healthy and happy.

AFTER-CARE, taking care of yourself AFTER you're already feeling exhausted, sad, sick, and stressed out.

SELF-CARE, actively taking steps EVERY DAY to take care of your mind, body, and spirit to keep from feeling exhausted, sad, sick, or stressed out.

Y'all your health and Wellness are an everyday thing. Waiting to take care of yourself is like waiting to run out of gas before filling up your tank. #truth

We didn't all learn how to take care of ourselves before now. Forgive yourself.

I bet you have always done the best you could with what you knew at the time.

You are learning now. Growing. You know better. You know what you need.

DON'T LET SELF-CARE BE AN AFTERTHOUGHT FRIEND.

Here are some SELF-CARE ACTIVITIES you can add EVERY DAY to put your well-being at the top of your to-do list:

- drink lots of water/stay hydrated, set a timer or reminder if you're like me and forget to drink throughout the day!! Like, especially whenever you might feel dull or lack energy, chug some water and see how ya feel! Drink up! πŸ’¦

 - make eating healthy easier by simplifying your diet, eating small nutritious meals, sticking to what you know you like, prep meals in advance, keep healthy snacks on hand as an alternative to eating a heavy meal. Eat well. 🌿

- take a break, literally - when you're feeling tired, overwhelmed, stressed out, or worn out..walk away, and take a moment to yourself. We all need a minute or extra rest sometimes, don't be afraid to ask for yours. Resting is not selfish! πŸ₯±

- spend time in nature or getting sunshine, studies show even 15 minutes of sunshine or time in nature can have a dramatic improvement on your mood and overall well-being. Get outside!! 🏜

- move your body, it doesn't even have to be for very long or very hard, gentle movement still decreases stress, improves strength, increases heart health, cellular function, energy levels and improves your mobility and vitality. Go for a walk, stretch your body, do tai chi, do yoga, get moving! πŸ’ƒπŸƒπŸŒ

- put your phone down, we spend more time than ever looking at screens, put it down, spend time with yourself doing something you've been putting off or really enjoy, read a book or spend time with a friend. Social media gives us the illusion of connection, real connection happens in real life. Get offline to better align with yourself and your loved ones. πŸ‘«πŸ‘¬πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘πŸ‘­

Did those feel like too much?

START SMALLER!

- drink 1 glass of water after waking

- wash your face

- brush your teeth

- take a nap

- eat an apple

- call a friend

- write in a journal

- meditate

I know, it can be hard to start,

DO 1 THING JUST FOR YOU TODAY

AND SEE HOW IT FEELS.

EVERYDAY SELF-CARE is about adding activities in your day that heal and fill you up instead of filling your day with activities that constantly drain you. πŸ’–πŸ’–Β
